About Teresa

Teresa Rivadeneira, AIA, RID is the Principal and lead designer of her firm, T•R•I architectural + interior design, llc.

Since 2003, T•R•I  has provided design expertise to some of Alabama's top industries and institutions, including UAB, the University of Alabama, Birmingham City Schools, the City of Birmingham, and the BJCC. T•R•I  is part of the BJCC approved design team for the $96.16 MM Legacy Arena project, expected to complete in 2022.

Teresa's love of design began in her hometown of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

After graduating from Universidad Laica Vicente Rocafuerte in 1987 she began a private practice designing open offices for a furniture manufacturer and teaching AutoCAD to young A/E professionals. In 1992 she left Ecuador to enroll at the University of Houston in Texas, obtaining a Master of Architecture specializing in design, historic preservation, and adaptive reuse, all of which remain close to her heart.

Her fulfillment comes from knowing that her designs will directly impact the lives of the people using them.

Throughout her early career Teresa had the privilege of working alongside some of the top design teams in the country, and credits much of her success to the knowledge and leadership skills exemplified by these individuals.  This combination of knowledge and hands on experience coupled with a fierce drive for excellence led Teresa to relocate to Birmingham and form T•R•I architectural + interior design, llc in the summer of 2003. Since then her focus has been commercial, institutional, and residential design for clients throughout the State of Alabama. She has served as preceptor for the Auburn University Urban Studio in Birmingham, a teaching and mentorship program for architectural, design, and construction students.

“I enjoy being an architect and I believe being a woman compliments my talents and skills. Our professional capability is not inherent to our gender, but is the expression of our creativity, knowledge, and experience.”

Teresa is licensed in both Architecture and Interior Design and is an active member of AIA. She is committed to the growth of her local community through the Birmingham Historical Society and English Village Garden Club. She hopes to inspire more young people – especially women -  to join the design industry.

“We just need to look around us to find the marvelous work produced by outstanding architects, such as Zaha Hadid, Denise Scott Brown, and Maya Lin who inspire all of us to be the best architects we can be, and to embrace the challenges that our profession brings.”
